Marking the 55th anniversary of the creation of the Berlin Wall, this epic tale extends across generations and unfolds against the backdrop of a dangerous Cold War Berlin.

This historically accurate, action-packed, 3-books-in-one features teens and their family’s struggle living in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, from its creation after WWII, to life behind the wall during the Cold War, to the Wall’s ultimate and final destruction.
Both educational and exciting, Life Behind the Wall is a great choice for middle readers at home or school.

Rating: ✰✰✰✰ (4 out of 5 stars)

My Thoughts:
In Candy Bombers, it’s 1948 and cousins Erich and Katarina, along with their loved ones, are trying to survive the starvation tactics the Soviet soldiers are using on the East side of the Berlin Wall. In Beetle Bunker, it’s 1961 and thirteen-year-old Sabine Becker discover a hidden underground bunker. Using it only as an escape from home, she soon realizes that it could be the answers to her and her family’s prayers. In Smuggler’s Treasure, it’s 1989 and Liesl lives in relative peace in West germany. She’s working on a class project about the Berlin Wall when she stumbles onto a secret she’s determined to find more about.

I read this series when I was twelve and loved all three books. I was a huge Robert Elmer fan and a real history geek (still am). I also loved series that incorporated history with adventure and mystery. When I saw this book was available for review, I knew I had to snatch it to read with my eleven-year-old sister! Life Behind the Wall is the perfect series for younger readers. It effortlessly combines valuable, educational lessons with exciting adventure, interesting storylines, and likable characters. My little sister didn’t know much about the Berlin Wall or the Cold War before reading these books, so it was really interesting and neat to watch her learn while having fun at the same time! We liked how each book’s characters were interconnected with each other. We also enjoyed the effortless writing style– they were really fast and engaging reads!

If you have younger readers you want to introduce historical fiction to, these are the perfect books to start with. With exciting adventure, engaging writing style, palpable setting, educational lessons, and fun characters this is definitely going on the keeper shelf.

**I received this book free from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts are entirely my own.
