Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read/Want To Read

August 4, 2015 by Bekah 11 Comments

toptentuesdayI know, I know. I haven’t done one of these fun Top Ten Tuesday posts in quite some time. I kept on wanting to, but alas–Tuesday would always fly by and it would be the next day when I remembered that I didn’t put it together or life would just get in the way. *facepalm* I’ve been a very bad blogger–I’m really sorry, guys! But when I saw this week’s topic at The Broke and the Bookish, I knew I just HAD to participate, as fairytale retelling books are some of my favorites! I mean, c’mon. Who doesn’t love a good ol’ fairytale?! So, I’ve separated this list into ones I’ve read and the ones I am absolutely dying to get my hands on. Please share some of the fairytale retellings you’ve enjoyed or are on your TBR in the comments below! I’m always looking for more books to read (though I’m not sure exactly why… I already have 400+ on my Goodreads to-read list…*shrugs shoulders*). 😉 Anyways, here goes.

Library

Fairytales I've Read Collage

  1. Fairy Tale Collection by Melanie Dickerson This series is a fairytale lovers dream. DREAM, I tell you. One of my favorites, it includes medieval retellings of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty & the Beast, Snow White, Cinderella, and Princess & the Frog. PLUS Melanie’s next book releasing in November is based on Rapunzel. SO EXCITED!!
    Amazon | Goodreads
  2. Cinder by Marissa Meyer I read Cinder a few years ago when it came out, so while I don’t remember it really well I remember liking this unique YA dystopian retelling of Cinderella. Cyborgs, aliens, handsome princes, oh my!
    Amazon | Goodreads
  3. Doon series by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon I wasn’t really sure if this counted as a “fairytale” retelling, but I still had to include this fun series because it’s awesome. Loosely based on the musical “Brigadoon”, Doon tells the fantastical story of two best friends who while visiting Scotland discover a mystical land and fall in love. Fairytale lovers unite!
    Amazon | Goodreads
  4. Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen Again, read this book a long time ago but I remember I really enjoyed this entertaining alternate retelling of Robin Hood, told from the perspective of Will “Scarlet.”
    Amazon | Goodreads
  5. The Selection by Keira Cass You’re probably really tired of me saying this (sorry!), but AGAIN, read this one years ago and loved it. I think it’s based loosely off Cinderella. Looking at this cover and synopsis makes me want to read it again, like, now. *wink* Anyways, if you like YA, dystopian, fairytales, etc. this should be on your to-be-read list.

Fairytales I Want to Read Collage

  1. Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson I first saw this lovely eye-catcher on Rissi’s (a blogger friend) awesome “Cover Candy” post and have been itching to get my hands on it ever since. A little blurb from Goodreads, “Glowing strands of romance, mystery, and suspense are woven into this breathtaking debut—a thrilling retelling of the ‘Bluebeard’ fairy tale.” Um, YES PLEASE.
    Amazon | Goodreads
  2. Towering by Alex Finn That cover is GORGEOUS, wouldn’t y’all agree?! A retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale and described as a “gothic and darkly romantic YA novel.”
    Amazon | Goodreads
  3. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas I haven’t loved the faerie books I’ve picked up in the past (the one or two I’ve actually read) but this Beauty and the Beast faerie retelling sounds interesting. Plus it looks stunning.
    Amazon | Goodreads
  4. A Wicked Thing by Rhiannon Thomas I know I’ve been quite repetitive in this post, but again, THAT COVER. It’s a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, and goes into what happens after happily ever after. Must. Get. My. Hands. On. It. Now.
    Amazon | Goodreads
  5. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge Another Beauty & the Beast retelling, this beauty (see what I did there??) sounds magical and all kinds of fantasy fun.
    Amazon | Goodreads

    Great list!
I’ve wanted to read Scarlet for forever. And Doon looks amazing, I really hope to read it soon.
I forgot about A Wicked Thing! It looks really good and I still need to read it.
So many retellings, so little time.

Thanks, Olivia! Ahh, A Wicked Thing does look amazing and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. And Doon is seriously good–you should definitely check it out. Haha, exactly, there are just too many lovely-lookin’ books to read. 😉

Thanks for stopping by my blog! 🙂

What a fabulous collection, Bekah. I won “A Wicked Thing” in an Epic Reads giveaway but have as yet to read it. “Cruel Beauty” has been on my shelf for far TOO LONG. Must read that ASAP especially since people keep telling me how amazing Rosamund’s books are. Oh, and of course, I’m anxious to read “Towering.” I really liked Alex’s “Beastly” and have her upcoming book to read, too, so I’m eager to read more by her. 🙂

    Love the list.

Thanks, Rissi. Oo, that’s super neat. I didn’t know EpicReads did giveaways until recently when I entered a couple. So fun! Same, I’ve heard her books are great but never read any. So, I’ve been wanting to read ‘Towering’ and ‘Beastly’ for a while, but until I read your comment I didn’t realize they were from the same author! *facepalm* Ugh, I’m so weird sometimes. Lol. Anyways, glad to hear ‘Beastly’ is good! 🙂 Thanks for coming by–always nice to chat with you. 🙂

I keep seeing Scarlet on everyone’s list today and I’m dying to read it now. I believe I’ve read a couple of Melanie Dickerson novels, my memory is awful! Stands of Bronze and Gold looks so beautiful, I love a good cover. Nice list!

Hi, Alicia. If you like unique retellings and Robin Hood, you will definitely enjoy ‘Scarlet’! Lol, I can relate–sometimes I will buy books on my kindle, read them, and then buy a hard copy without realizing I already read and own it. 😉 Isn’t it?! I feel like these YA covers just keep getting prettier and prettier. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog! 🙂

I loved Cinder by Marissa Meyer! I think Scarlet has been my favorite in the series so far. You ready for Winter this November? It feels like I’ve been waiting forever for that book to finally come out. I really enjoyed A Court of Thorns and Roses too. Not my favorite because of some NA stuff I wasn’t a big fan of. I’m curious to see how that series will continue 🙂

Hey, Stephanie. I loved Cinder too, but I still haven’t read ‘Scarlet’ and ‘Cress’! Hmm, maybe some book shopping is in order tonight. 😉 I hate waiting for the next books in a series (especially with cliffhangers!) so I usually just wait for all of them to release. Oh, really? I’m not a huge fan of NA content sometimes… so I’d probably feel the same way. It has such a pretty cover though! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and chatting with me! 🙂

Doesn’t it?! I need, need, need to read it soon. 😉 I’ve been in one of those obsessive reading moods lately, which I blame on all these awesome lists I’ve seen the past few days! Like, after I saw your list I read ‘Neverland’ the next day. Thanks, Cheryl–and thanks for stopping by my blog! 🙂

I’m not sure if I would consider it a retelling exactly because it’s about Sleeping Beauty’s daughter who reminds me more of Mulan. Either way, it’s a great read.
